This morning I had the pleasure of being apart of a panel with Canadian Music Mogul & Vice president of Feva TV Farley Flex and Celebrity Manager & Boss Lady Marina Phillips on CTV News. For those of you who are not Canadian, CTV is one of the largest networks in Canada and used to be my old stomping grounds when I was on Degrassi.

As a part of Black History Month they brought up the very important topic of diversity in pop culture on Canadian Television and if Canada is doing a fair job of reflecting the true diversity of our country. Stats show that 87% of Canadian TV is White and frankly that’s absurd! I grew up on TV in Canada and I always felt fortunate to be the representation for people of color because the opportunities for us are few. I’ve lived in the US for many years and people are always shocked when I tell them that we don’t have a Canadian version of BET or our own NAACP awards or Black Canadian Essence Magazine, so as a person of Color you truly have to fight to have your story told. Toronto is one of the most progressive and beautiful cities to live in and be apart of but when it comes to our Entertainment Industry and the reflection of seeing faces that look like mine and friends we still have a lot of room to improve. I’m glad that CTV brought up the importance of this ongoing discussion and that I could be apart of it  and I hope to continue to make a change in Canada and for people of Color on Televsion.
