(New Video Post) Happy @ShondaRhimes Day! #TGIT #BlackActressWeek

shonda-rhimes

I am inspired by Shonda Rimes!

I can’t contain my excitement for #TGIT tonight on ABC aka The Shonda Rhimes takeover! I’ve been a huge fan of her work for a very long time and tonight feels like icing on top of an already well decorated and sugar drenched cake!

I think my first introduction to Shonda Rhimes was “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge” which she wrote and Halle Berry eloquently portrayed and I became obsessed with this movie! I was already a big Dorothy Dandridge fan and I truly felt like this movie gave you a beautiful glimpse into her life. I’m a stalker of film credits for any work that enjoy so when I saw Shonda Rhimes name I wanted to see anything she worked on! I even watched and enjoyed “Crossroads” with Britney Spears because Shonda Rhimes wrote it and Zoe Saldana was in it and I love her too! Then I became a fan of “Grey’s Anatomy”, I was so impressed with seeing a show that had a cast that looked like the real world because it was diverse. These characters were more than just the “asian girl” or the “black girl” but rather they were regular, complex, flawed, layered people who happened to be people of color. I’ve been a rock solid viewer of Grey’s Anatomy and watched every season, because I support the Shonda movement.

Then she came and dropped the bomb that is “Scandal” a show inspired by a Black woman, starring a Black woman and created by a bBack woman! Three levels of greatness! And then on top of that Black women have proved that we are a huge audience that should not be messed with, I mean seriously do not go onto twitter, Facebook or instagram on Thursday night if you are not watching “Scandal” because you will feel like a fish out of water! It’s beautiful to see us all coming together to support a great show and our sisters!

But now she’s taking it even further with “How to Get Away With Murder” starring the best actress in the whole world, Viola Davis! Yet again breaking down another barrier, proving the haters wrong and showing us again as strong, beautiful, sexy, flawed, courageous, intriguing and BLACK!! Woo! Her inspiration is through the roof! And the best part about Ms. Rhimes is that she is so humble through all of this. She’s broken the glass ceiling and has not stopped climbing and but yet she’s still down here cheering with all of us too.

Thank you Shonda Rhimes for showing us what we can do and for continuing to inspire EVERYONE, you are appreciated!

(New Post) “Dear Universe” Box DIY Project

IMG_7559

Hey guys,

Lately I’ve been in a very whimsical mood, I’m searching for something but I’m not sure what it is and I’m pushing myself to find it. I’ve been constantly thinking about my potential and reaching all of my goals by any means necessary, and I’ve been thinking about “living” and what that means to me and truly giving my self the chance to just live.

A couple weekends ago my best friend and I decided to spontaneously have a “paint party”. I’ve told you guys a couple times that I love to paint and I discovered how enjoyable and relaxing it is a few years ago after having multiple dreams where I was painting, so I had to start! So my bestie and I got some wine, went to Walmart (since it’s cheaper than the paint store) and bought a few canvas’, some brushes and paint palettes and we went in!

It felt great to be present, relaxed and happy and just focusing on making something that felt good. Along with our canvas’ we bought small heart shaped boxes to paint and we decided to make them “Dear Universe” boxes. This is something I had been thinking about for awhile as another “self help” project that allows you to give your wishes, dreams, hopes and wants to the Universe. But not to be confused with some sort of  “genie in a bottle” because I don’t believe that we can ask the universe for something and just sit and wait for it to come. What I think you actually need to do is, to ask the Universe aka God and ask him to guide you in the right direction to get what you want. Writing it down and putting it somewhere that it can serve as a reminder or an unexpected surprise when you forget about it and then find it again. Sort of like that part in The Alchemist when he re-finds the two stones after a year of working at the Crystal shop and the stones remind him of what his goal and mission was in the first place and why he must continue on his journey. That is the Universe/God guiding you to get what you want. “And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” (Paulo Coelho).

So I created a “Dear Universe “ Box, I found a heart shaped box because I love LOVE, I’ve painted it my favorite color, pink and I’ve filled it with some of my goals, dreams and wants for my life. I plan to re-read the notes I’ve written every now and then as a reminder and I’m relying on my faith that I will get done everything that is in this box and that God will guide me in the right direction on my journey. This is a very simple DIY and if you need a little pick me up, I highly suggest creating one in a box, or jar or anything you’ve got that you want to make pretty lol.

Happy Wednesday, hope you guys are well!

(New Video Post) Taking Risks & Knowing Your Worth #SelfLoveSaturday

BeSoGoodTheyCantIgnoreYOu

Happy Self Love Saturday!

How are you guys doing? Today I want to talk to you about “knowing your own worth” and “taking risks” and why I believe that both of these things go together. My self love journey has taught me to have a lot of confidence in myself and be sure in who I am and what I am doing and where I am going in my life. This confidence has made me realize that the “risks” that I have to take are really not risky at all but rather just steps that I need to take in order to move ahead on my path. I have come along way, I have learned from great teachers, I have survived and succeeded through all of my bumps and falls and it is all of this history that makes me aware and confident of my worth and why I will be okay through any “risk”.

When you reflect on all that you’ve been through and all that you’ve learned and how far you’ve come than you’ll see that the things that you are contemplating, the “risks” that you are worried about, are really not risks at all because you’re prepared and ready for them. Take the leap! Check out my video below and have a great weekend xo

(New Video Post) The Importance Of A Balanced Life #SelfLoveSaturday

Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony. – Thomas Merton

Happy Self Love Saturday!

Today I want to talk to you guys about the importance of having a balanced life. The more I enjoy my life the more I realize how important it is for me to have a sense of balance and structure and I need to have a little bit of everything going on in my life in order to feel like a grounded person. In my past I used to only focus on my work, and everything had to do with it, even my hobbies were all to do with my work and this ended up burning me out. It took me awhile to figure out that I needed my life to be a good mix of work, play, love, art and giving back.

As a part of my self love journey I took the time to work out the balance that I need for my own life and happiness and this step has been incredibly important for my overall growth as a woman. We need to work hard, but we also need to have fun and a social life! I truly believe we all need a creative outlet and I also believe that it is incredibly important to give back to your community through charity and volunteer work. We all have to do our part in this world and each one should teach one and help out as much as possible to make your own world a better place. Check out my video below on why I think having a balanced life is big part of Self Love!

(New Video Post) Breaking Through Depression [9 Self Help Tips]

Screen Shot 2014-09-09 at 11.16.31 PM

I’ve been very open about the fact that in my past I suffered from Depression and this is why I now work so hard at having a positive mentality and lifestyle. My depression started sometime in 2009 and lasted till 2011, and it was a very dark time in my life and it truly felt like I would never get out of it. Near the end of 2011 I was fortunate enough to have a small moment of clarity to motivate myself to find every way possible to break through my depression and change my life and everything that I have done for the past few years is a direct result of breaking away from my depression. Gaining control of my life and mind has motivated me in ways that I could never have imagined. But it didn’t come easily, I have worked and continue to work very hard to be a positive person and I treat my depression similar to a person who is a recovering addict. I am aware that I am the type of person who needs to be in a controlled environment all the time and around people that uplift me because I am prone to being negative about myself and my life in an unhealthy way. Over the years I have learned a lot and figured out a few tips that helped me to break through depression naturally and I wanted to share them with you guys, check out my list and video below. If you are going through Depression right now, please tell someone and trust me when I say, you can get through this so hang on.

1. Tell Someone

It is so important to tell someone about how you feel. It’s hard sometimes to be so open and vulnerable but when you tell someone it allows for help to come your way. You can not do this alone, so please find someone that you are comfortable with and tell them how you feel.

2. Diet & Nutrition

During my Depression I gained a lot of weight, because my diet was very reckless and I didn’t realize it but a lot of the food I ate was apart of the problem. Healthy foods are so important when it comes to changing the way you feel about yourself, we need nutrients and balance in our diets. Change your food and see how your mentality begins to change too.

3. Sleep

Sleep more! I cannot stress enough how important good amounts of sleep are for your health and mentality. I used to go to bed at 4am every night because a million thoughts were running through my head and I was avoiding sleep. This was a huge battle for me to fight and it took me a long time to finally get a normal sleep pattern. But similar to my bad diet, the lack of sleep was also a big part of the problem with my depression and instead of helping me it was hurting me. Normal amounts of sleep are incredibly important to making you feel healthy and happy, so please go to bed at a normal time and make sure to get at least 6 hours of sleep every night.

4. Write it out

Write out how you feel, it will feel like a release and give you a small sense of calmness. I do a lot of writing through out my day, I write myself love notes in the morning, a to-do list every night for the next day and I write out my feelings if I’m not in the best mood. Writing is like therapy for me and was a big step in my recovery because I was able to release my thoughts and worries on to the pages instead of keeping them bottled up inside. I highly suggest writing every day, whether it’s a sentence or a full page, but just be in the moment and clear your thoughts by writing it out.

5. Exercise

Studies have shown that daily physical activity for just 30 minutes a day helps to relieve stress, and boost your mood and this is what you need if you are feeling depressed! I know it will be hard and you may not want to get out of bed but you have to force yourself to do it. Tell a friend to work out with you or get a personal trainer who will hold you accountable, just find a way to get at least 30 minutes worth of exercise every day.

6. Dancing & Singing

Did you know just 10 minutes of Dancing and Singing every day can make you feel amazing! Regardless if you’re an actual singer or dancer, this can still do wonders! I’m a singer so this is easy for me to do but I make sure to sing every day just for fun and I dance as a part of my physical activity. Try it, it’s pretty addicting.

7. Set Small Goals

Setting small goals for yourself helps you to get back into the groove of things and this is very important. When you are feeling depressed you normally don’t want to do anything at all but it’s very important to force yourself out of this funk and setting small goals can help you to do this.

8. Self Help Books

I love Self Help Books! For over 2 years all I read was self help books and as corny as this sounds, they helped me lol. I’ve done a couple videos on a few of my favorites here.

9. Control Your Thoughts

This is the most important step of them all, you have to learn to Control Your Thoughts! It’s going to be hard but the more self aware you become the easier it will be. Realize that at this time you are in a negative head space and that your thoughts are similar to a wild horse, so whatever you do not let it run wild, control what goes in and what comes out. Don’t expect it to happen over night but the more you work on it the easier it will be.

(New Video Post) What is Your Mantra? #SelfLoveSaturday

mantra-3

Happy Self Love Saturday!

Today’s video is inspired by Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of “Eat Pray Love”. I recently watched an interview with her where she spoke about the importance of having a Positive Mantra. Your  Mantra is a statement or slogan repeated frequently. Most of us don’t realize it but we already have a built in Mantra replaying inside of our head and these words greatly effect how our life plays out.  A positive Mantra is incredibly important for how you feel, and how your day goes because what you think you become! So with that I’m asking you guys, what is the slogan going through your head and is it helping or hurting you? Check out my video below on why you should have a positive Mantra.

(New Video Post) #100HappyDays #Day50 Half Way Done! [VLOG]

gratitude-happiness_large

Here we go! I’ve finally hit my 50 day half way mark in my 100 Happy Days Journey, Woop! So far this journey has been fantastic, it’s been very eye opening and at times challenging because I’ve had a few days where I wasn’t so happy and if it wasn’t for the challenge I probably would have sulked for a little longer than I should LOL.

What I’m learning on this challenge is control. I’m realizing on a daily basis that I have complete control over my life and my own happiness. I’m also incredibly open to how grateful I am for my life and day to day experiences and this constant gratitude keeps me happy! True happiness lies in having gratitude for everything, even the bad things because whether you realize it or not you’re learning and growing from those experiences and they are necessary. Check out my vlog below on some of the things that have made me happy over the last 50 days, and if you haven’t started I encourage you to do so, it’s great exercise for the soul.

(New Video Post) Challenge Yourself Daily #SelfLoveSaturday

Happy Self Love Saturday!

Screen Shot 2014-08-30 at 1.19.23 AM

Today’s video is inspired by Oprah’s “Super Soul Sunday”, a show that I watch every week and I absolutely love it! This show has become apart of my weekly Sunday relaxation and education! There is so much that can you can learn from each of Oprah’s guests on how to truly make the best of your life and that’s what I find so inspiring about the show.

Watching this show reminds me of the importance of seeking constant growth for your soul. Between Super Soul Sunday and my Self Love journey I have learned how important it is to challenge yourself on a regular basis. There should never be a chance for you to be content with where you are, you should always be seeking more, doing and searching for more and working to truly live to your ultimate potential. Nothing good happens in comfort zones so we shouldn’t be comfortable with staying in one. My self love journey has been a moving train of growth in every area of my life and I’m truly grateful for that because if I didn’t start my self love journey I would not have gained the insight to see why the constant challenge is important. Check out my video below on the importance of Challenging Yourself!

Happy Self Love Saturday.

(New Post) “If You’re An Actor, Act!” — Being In The Moment

tumblr_lsao1oByta1qzbcjoo1_500

A week ago I was watching Oprah and she was interviewing poet Mark Nepo about life and passions and he said something simple that struck a chord with me, he said “if you’re a singer, sing! If you’re a writer, write” and he continued to go on about the simplicity of that concept but the importance of just doing whatever it is you have a passion for. Don’t over think it, don’t worry about being famous or outside pressures but rather just be in the moment and do it.

Being in the moment and being present is a concept that I’m working very hard on right now because I have a tendency to worry and over think everything and it takes me out of just the simple enjoyment of doing whatever I do. The other day I put my new resolution to the test at an audition, it was for a Theatre company and I’ll be honest theatre auditions usually make me pretty nervous.

My comfort zone is film/tv and singing so I often enjoy the fact that I have to sing in Theatre auditions but it’s not exactly in the style that I’m most comfortable with and I usually have to go through my repertoire and find the most “musical theatre” style song that I can pull off within a weeks notice. Theatre auditions also usually require a monologue and this is the part that makes me really nervous! I love to act and I love dialogue and doing a scene but I always struggle with finding a good contemporary or classical style monologue that shows my range as an actress and makes me memorable. Being memorable is always my biggest concern so I often opt for doing something completely different and unexpected at an audition just to make sure that the name “Andrea Lewis” won’t be forgotten. Most Theatre auditions that I go to I find the quirkiest monologue that makes me laugh because I know it’ll make my audience laugh and laughter is a good way to make someone remember you! But like I said before, I usually worry and overthink about everything but this time around I decided to just “be”.

I went to my audition, wore my favorite red pants because red is a fiery color and I’m a fire sign! I picked a monologue that had subtle hints of comedy and a unique story and I sang one of my favorite songs from the show “Once on This Island”, which is an amazing show but I don’t often hear people sing songs from it so I knew it would be something that the casting director hadn’t heard yet for the day. And I thought of Mark Nepo and the casting director Debra Aquilla who many years ago, gave me the advice to “just play” and that’s exactly what I did. I loved performing my monologue and was super proud of myself for memorizing a 2 minute monologue in 2 days and I felt fantastic singing one of my favorite songs and I was completely, honestly and openly in the moment. I didn’t worry about what the casting directors were thinking and if I booked it or would have a call back or if I sounded good or looked good, or convinced them, instead I just focused on convincing myself and it was the best I’d felt in an audition in a long time. Singing, acting, and entertaining is what I do and whenever I get the chance to do what I do that’s all I should be thinking about. Being in the moment, enjoying it and grateful for it.

This post is to remind all of you guys  to just do what you do, if you’re an actor, act, if you’re a writer, write, if you’re a singer, sing, if you are a designer, then go design! Whatever it is, just do it, don’t worry about anything else except being in the moment and doing exactly what you are meant to do.

Happy Monday! Peace Out!
